The States wants environmentally sound waste management
Islanders are being asked for their thoughts on the future of waste disposal in Guernsey.

The first stage of a 50-page consultation document is looking at how to reduce the amount of waste produced, which is followed by encouraging re-use and recycling.

A central part of the Board of Administration's planned strategy is the waste to energy plant, which will reduce the island's use of tips by 90%.

It will also provide 10% of Guernsey's electricity requirements.

The plant was approved by the States in 2002.

The document also deals with issues such as the costs of recycling and use of the "user-pays" principal for some waste collection services.

It also emphasises the board's commitment to environmentally sound and economic solutions to waste management.
