The future role of lifeguards at a Jersey bathing pool is being considered because fewer people are using the pool. The decline in numbers at West Park pool is being blamed on the extension of the Waterfront development and seaweed on the beach.
And lifeguards are also to get more involved in more rescues with the help of a specially-adapted jet ski.
The beach lifeguard service operates from May to September at the bays in St Ouen, St Brelade and Greve de Lecq.
Co-ordinated operations
Jersey's Tourism department has been responsible for the island's lifeguards since the early 1960s but this has now been passed to the Harbours Department.
Harbourmaster Captain Howard Le Cornu says the move should bring the RNLI, Fire and Rescue service and the beach guards together for more co-ordinated operations.
