Good report for island's beaches
A Jersey beach
Jersey's beaches are among some of the cleanest in the British Isles
Jersey's beaches are cleaner than ever, according to a conservation body.

Figures released by the Marine Conservation Society show the Channel Islands, as a whole, recorded the lowest levels of sewage and litter in the British Isles.

The tests involved surveying the amount of sewage-related debris and rubbish strewn on beaches.

However, Guernsey's beaches had almost two and a half times as much litter on them than those in Jersey.

Although Jersey's beaches are the cleanest in Britain, they are, nevertheless, slightly dirtier than they were a year ago.

Sue Daley, chairman of the local branch of the Marine Conservation Society, says she is delighted that Jersey has fared so well in the national tests.

But she says too many islanders are still continuing to toss cigarette butts and plastic packaging onto the beaches.
