Hundreds of new homes proposed
Housing
States politicians propose 300 new homes to be built each year
A new housing action plan could see 300 new homes built in Guernsey every year.

If the States approve the housing policy in this month's Policy and Resource plan, the number of homes needed would be monitored annually and reviewed in the 2005 plan.

The recommendations say the majority of new homes should be within the urban area.

They could also see homes built on some greenfield sites, if it can be shown there is a clear need to develop on the land.

The plan also asks members to approve policies to provide affordable housing when the need is identified.

Surplus accommodation

The report says it is important to understand that 'affordable' does not mean sub-standard.

It also calls for surplus accommodation to be converted into sheltered housing, residential or nursing homes and staff hostels.

One of the major parts of the plan is to bring empty houses back into use and reduce the under-occupation of homes.

Preventing development in the countryside and protecting agricultural land is also recommended to enhance the image of the island to potential investors and visitors.
