Airlines welcomed to island
Jersey Airport
VLM's application to fly from Jersey to London City Airport was approved
Jersey travellers could have a wider choice of airlines in future, under proposals to welcome any airlines which want to fly to the island.

In a turnaround of current regulations, the 'open skies' policy means airlines would no longer have to be licensed before they could fly to the island.

The Economic Development Committee discussed an application by VLM airlines to fly from Jersey to London City Airport.

It heard objections from existing carrier Flybe, but opted to approve the application.

As part of the discussion, the committee considered whether the existing system of licensing was still needed.

President Deputy Gerald Voisin said he believed an open skies policy, where any airline could fly to the island without the need for a licence, would be in the best interests of paying travellers.

The committee decided that, in future, any application to fly to Jersey should be approved, unless there were very strong reasons why it should not be.
