Police say concrete slabs were used to cause the damage |
A memorial bench to a boy killed in a road accident has been wrecked by vandals. Police are investigating extensive damage caused last weekend to a play area at Jersey's Trinity Youth Club.
Officers say concrete slabs were used to break benches and tables.
It is estimated the cost of repairing the damage to the play area will be over 1,000.
Club caretaker Dave Pitton said: "A few years ago - about 1994 - a lad called Paul was killed on the avenue, and youth members and friends raised money for this nice, teak bench.
"That was completely smashed to smithereens and then thrown over a fence into a potato field."
It looks as though the play area, which at the moment is open to anyone, will be locked in future.
'Mindless wrecking'
Trinity is just another parish in Jersey where vandals have targeted a community facility and smashed it up.
Mr Pitton described the damage as "mindless wrecking" and said the club might have no alternative but to fence off the area and lock it.
"This is a charity - it's completely free to anyone.
"We have three-year-olds to retired people using it at the weekend. They come and go as it suits them - there's no charge for it.
"We've got to seriously think now about putting up a barrier, which will cost us a fortune."
