Sex fails to match Indiana in UK

The Sex and the City stars at the German premiere
Sex and the City has also topped the box office in the US

Sex and the City took more than 8m at UK cinemas in its opening weekend, but failed to match the might of Indiana Jones, according to initial figures.

The film, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall, took 8,767,265 - including previews - at the box office.

Fans have been enthusiastic about the Sex and the City movie, based on the US TV series, despite mixed reviews.

Advance ticket sales hit 160,000 across the UK and many cinemas have laid on extra screenings.
