R&B star Rihanna has scored a UK number one with her latest single Umbrella through download sales alone.

"I feel blessed and loved," said the Barbados-born singer, whose record is not in shops until 28 May.

She held off a challenge from Maroon 5, whose Makes Me Wonder rose to number two, while Beyonce and Shakira's Beautiful Liar fell to three.

In the album charts, Linkin Park went straight to number one with their first album since 2004, Minutes to Midnight.

Canadian-American singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright was at number two with Release the Stars, while Welsh rockers Funeral for a Friend went in at number three with Tales Don't Tell Themselves.

Back in the singles chart, last week's number one - McFly's Baby's Coming Back - suffered a massive fall, landing at number 20.
