The BBC's adaptation of Bleak House picked up two nominations

Prime Suspect and Bleak House have both picked up two nominations, and British actress Helen Mirren is twice mentioned for best actress in a mini-series.

She also picked up a best film actress nomination for her role in The Queen, while her Elizabeth I co-star Jeremy Irons is up for best supporting actor.

Medical drama Grey's Anatomy was the big US winner, with four nominations.

The show's lead actress, Ellen Pompeo, is up for best actress in a television drama while her co-star and screen love interest Patrick Dempsey is nominated for best actor.

The show itself is up for the best TV drama - as is the castaway drama Lost, which beat it to the title this year.

Other programmes in the running include 24, Big Love and Heroes.

'Desperate' race

The best musical or comedy category is dominated by established favourites such as Desperate Housewives and The Office, with the instant hit Ugly Betty the only newcomer.

Huffman has been nominated best actress three years in a row

Lead actress America Ferrera also receives a nod for best actress in a comedy, but the category will be dominated by a re-run of this year's race between Desperate Housewives stars Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman, and the eventual winner, Mary-Louise Parker.

Hollywood star Alec Baldwin leads the nominees for best actor in a comedy, for his role in the Saturday Night Live satire, 30 Rock.

Former Friends star Matthew Perry, who helped announce the Golden Globe nominations, is in the running for best actor in a TV mini-series for his role in The Ron Clark Story - about a teacher who changes the life of his New York pupils.

Two British actors, Sir Ben Kingsley and Bill Nighy are also contenders for the same award.
