A lock of author Charles Dickens' hair has been sold for �3,120 - more than five times its estimated price tag. The hair was auctioned with a note of authentication from his sister-in-law and housekeeper Georgina Hogarth.
It was sold in London by Bonhams on Tuesday for �3,120, including premium and tax, after previously being given an estimated value of �400 to �600.
The Great Expectations and Christmas Carol author died in 1870. The hair went to a telephone bidder from the US.
The note from Ms Hogarth read: "I certify this Lock of Hair to be that of my Brother-in-law Charles Dickens."
Bonhams said Ms Hogarth gave away many mementoes relating to her brother-in-law with similar cards but this was the first lock of hair to be sold.
