The hair was sold with a note from Dickens' sister-in-law |
A lock of author Charles Dickens' hair has been sold for 3,120 - more than five times its estimated price tag. The hair was auctioned with a note of authentication from his sister-in-law and housekeeper Georgina Hogarth.
It was sold in London by Bonhams on Tuesday for 3,120, including premium and tax, after previously being given an estimated value of 400 to 600.
The Great Expectations and Christmas Carol author died in 1870. The hair went to a telephone bidder from the US.
The note from Ms Hogarth read: "I certify this Lock of Hair to be that of my Brother-in-law Charles Dickens."
Bonhams said Ms Hogarth gave away many mementoes relating to her brother-in-law with similar cards but this was the first lock of hair to be sold.
