The letters were written by Charles Dickens in 1847 |
Two letters written by Charles Dickens found in an attic in East Sussex have fetched 3,600 at auction. The letters were written by the novelist in 1847, when he was an actor, asking Julie Fortescue to join him to perform in a play in London.
Her great grandson Valentine Gardner, of Telscombe Cliffs, found them in a box of family letters in his attic.
They were up for auction in Lewes with a guide price of between 500 and 700 but fetched 1,800 each.
'Loved by many'
Mr Gardner said: "I am not freaky about these things but to just to hold something that you know is written by Charles Dickens is quite amazing.
"I would love to have kept them but I am afraid I don't have the money - I need the cash"
Collectors from as far a field as Canada and the United States expressed interest in the letters.
Aaron Dean, of Gorringes Auction Galleries, said: "It is Dickens - it is one of the fathers of English literature who is loved by many people the world over."
