Critics have been dismissive about Ritchie's fourth feature

The Jane Austen adaptation remained in pole position in its second weekend on release, a �1.9m haul bringing its takings in the UK and Eire to �6.4m.

Revolver entered the chart at two, its weekend takings of �882,814 putting it narrowly ahead of Land of the Dead.

However, as Revolver's figures include money from previews, the zombie horror did better between Friday and Sunday.

George A Romero's film, which opened on 39 fewer screens than Revolver, made �870,285 in its first three days of release.

Animation

Because Ritchie's film opened one day earlier, making �144,938 in its first 24 hours, its actual takings between Friday and Sunday were �737,876.

The only other new entry in this week's Top 10 was Japanese animation Howl's Moving Castle.

Based on a novel by Welsh author Dianne Wynne Jones, the film debuted at 10 with weekend takings of �212,628.

Elsewhere in the chart sex farce The 40-Year-Old Virgin slipped down a place to four, while prison comedy The Longest Yard dropped three places to five.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory continued to perform well at seven, making �255,866 in its ninth week of release.

This Friday sees the release of Goal!, a rags-to-riches soccer story featuring such football stars as David Beckham and Alan Shearer.
