Former Smiths singer Morrissey has returned to Manchester to play his first hometown show in 12 years.

The former Smiths singer appeared at a sell-out concert at the city's Evening News Arena with support from Glasgow art-rock band Franz Ferdinand.

The Smiths became closely associated with Manchester by fans around the world during the 1980s.

Morrissey, who now lives in Los Angeles, was born in the Stretford area of Greater Manchester.

He has been praised by many critics for his latest album You Are The Quarry.

Next month Morrissey is in charge of the Meltdown project, a series of concerts at London's Royal Festival Hall involving some of his favourite acts including the New York Dolls and Nancy Sinatra.

He will also play at Dublin Castle, and is due to perform at summer festivals including Leeds, Reading and Denmark's Roskilde.
