Morrissey's solo career has stalled

The announcement of a deal with Sanctuary Records comes off the back of renewed interest in The Smiths, following the recent 20th anniversary of their first single.

Morrissey has been living in Los Angeles for several years and has been without a record deal since parting company with Island Records.

Despite releasing several well-received albums as a solo artist, Morrissey has never managed to replicate the success he enjoyed with The Smiths.

The 1986 Smiths' album, The Queen Is Dead, is seen by many critics as one of the classic albums of the 1980s.

Sanctuary Records reviving the Attack label, which was once part of the Trojan Records reggae stable.

Past releases have included artists such as Gregory Isaacs, The Upsetters and Big Youth.

Sanctuary Group chief executive Merck said: "Morrissey is one of the most important artists of the last 20 years.

"We are delighted that he has given us the opportunity to lead the charge on this significant next phase of his career with a deal that is as innovative as his music."
