Michael Douglas and Renee Zellweger have added their support to the election campaign of George Clooney's father in the United States.

Douglas and Zellweger are among a number of Hollywood stars to help fund Democrat Nick Clooney's Congress bid.

Courteney Cox Arquette and Drew Barrymore also contributed to the $500,000 (279,000) Mr Clooney raised in the first three months of 2004.

The Kentucky Democrat's actor son George has also given his backing.

The Ocean's Eleven star appeared at two events in Kentucky to raise funds for his father last month.

About 150 people paid $250 (136) each to meet the actor at a restaurant while 100 people paid $1,000 (545) each to see him at a private home.

He said he and his father had political differences but that his father had "earned the right to be judged on his own merits".

Nick Clooney is Democratic candidate for the Fourth District seat of retiring US representative Ken Lucas.

The 70-year-old Clooney is a former television anchor and newspaper columnist. He is a self-described "commonsense Democrat" who opposes abortion and supports the rights of gun owners.

He is believed to have raised more money in the quarter ending 31 March than the three Republican candidates combined.

Last month, he said he was grateful for his son's help, saying it showed "this is more than just politics. We still matter to one another".
