Movie comedy School of Rock has gone straight to the top of the UK box office chart, with weekend takings more than double those of its nearest rival.

The Jack Black vehicle took 2.74m between Friday and Sunday.

It beat fellow new release Something's Gotta Give, the Jack Nicholson film which has earned Diane Keaton an Oscar nomination, into second place.

Big Fish dropped into third place while last week's number one, Scary Movie 3, fell into fourth position.

The Dreamers, Bernardo Bertolucci's much-talked about romance set on the eve of France's 1968 student demos, is a new entry at number 12, despite only showing at 34 screens.

The only other new entry is East End gangster movie Charlie, which stars ex-Bros drummer Luke Goss at number 13 - also showing at only 38 screens.

Oscar hopefuls this week make up a large part of the box office chart, including best film nominees Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in fifth place, Lost in Translation (sixth) and Master and Commander (15th).

Mountaineering documentary Touching the Void, named best film at the recent Evening Standard British Film Awards, makes a re-entry at number 14.
