They had been up against Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters and Coldplay for the top accolade in the awards announced at London's Park Lane Hotel.

Coldplay did not win any awards despite being nominated for four including best single for Clocks, best video for The Scientist and best live performance.

They also stayed away from the awards hosted by television presenter Iain Lee.

Duran Duran picked up the prize for lifetime achievement as they did at the MTV Video Music Awards in New York in August.

"The Q Awards are special because they're voted for by the people who matter most - real music fans," said Paul Rees, editor of Q magazine.

Christina Aguilera won best single award for Dirrty, Electric Six won best video for Gay Bar and Robbie Williams' sell-out Knebworth gigs earned him the best live act.

Blur won best album for Think Tank, while The Thrills picked up the best new act award and Muse won the award for innovation.

Veteran acts were honoured at the awards which will be broadcast on Channel 4 on Monday.

The Cure won the inspiration award, which recognises an act that has inspired a new generation of musicians and songwriters.

Dexy's Midnight Runners won the songwriter award while US rockers Jane's Addiction won the icon award.

The Q awards are among the biggest prizes on the rock scene.
