| Wednesday, 4 September, 2002, 11:18 GMT 12:18 UK Weller releases anti-war song ![]() Weller wrote the song at Noel Gallagher's house Paul Weller has written a song denouncing the "hypocrisy" of Tony Blair and George Bush over their stance towards Afghanistan and Iraq. But he will not join rock stars campaigning against military action in Iraq because his involvement with politics in the 1980s was "the biggest mistake ever".
He told BBC News Online that the song was about the way "we can't stop a baby in Africa from starving to death... but we can afford enough technology and weaponry to blow the world up a million times over". "It's about the irony of that and these people who lead us into war, and the hypocrisy that goes with it," he said.
"I don't think people want that. I think politicians are so far out of step with what people really want. And now the same thing's going to happen with Iraq." But he said he would not get behind any campaign after being "used" by the political group Red Wedge in the mid-1980s. "It was the biggest mistake ever for me because once you get involved with those people you see how it's all run," he said. "It's more about their egos and it's not about really making a difference."
"Probably if you'd asked me 25 years ago, I would have said, yeah, it definitely would change things," he said. "But in all honestly I don't know what one song can change." A Bullet for Everyone was written at Oasis star Noel Gallagher's house and will appear on Weller's 27th album, Illumination, which is released on 16 September. Blur and Massive Attack are among the stars to have spoken out against war in Iraq, while Oasis, the Manic Street Preachers and Sugababes will donate songs to a new War Child charity album. George Michael was recently lambasted by the press for a single, Shoot the Dog, which satirised Tony Blair's relationship with George Bush, depicting Mr Blair as a poodle in its video. |
