Eighties pop act Duran Duran have vowed to re-record their hit single Rio if England win Friday's quarter final World Cup match against Brazil.

Former lead singer Simon Le Bon said on Thursday that the new version of the song would be a tribute to the England defender Rio Ferdinand, and the rest of the squad.

Le Bon added that the original lyrics to the song would be re-written with words devoted to Ferdinand.

Ferdinand was credited with the first goal in England's win against Denmark.

Rio was one of Duran Duran's major hits, with lyrics about sun-kissed beaches and girls, and a glossy video to match.

It helped establish the group as one of the most glamorous and idolised among pop fans of the time.

Duran Duran had a total of 13 British top 10 hits between 1981 and 1993.

After three of the five left in succession, they finally ceased to be in 1997, although Le Bon and Nick Rhodes have continued to work under the band's name along with US guitarist Warren Cuccurullo.

But Le Bon, 43, told Sky News that the re-formed band would revamp Rio because it had proved a hit with football fans.

They have been adapting the song into a terrace chant with lyrics honouring Ferdinand.

"I'm really amazed that the song is having this new life actually," said Le Bon.

"It's really great for us to be a little part of what's going on in Japan because we're really excited about it obviously.

Radio Five Live has been running a competition on its website for fans to put new lyrics to the Duran Duran classic.

The winner was composed by Jim Tomlin who wrote: "His name is Rio and he dances on the grass.

"Cos he's just scored a goal, though it wasn't quite first class.

"Oh Rio, Rio, you're a centre back with skill, And you will dance again, when you score against Brazil."
