Singapore has hosted Asia's first MTV Awards, with a glittering show bringing stars from East and West together.

Asia's favourite artists were honoured with 11 different awards from the music video channel, while another eight trophies were given to international acts.

All of the winners were chosen from a shortlist of five in each category by 13 million votes from across Asia, cast by post and over the internet.

The only exception to this was Hong Kong martial arts star Jacky Chan who won the inspiration award, although he was unable to collect it in person.

Westlife won favourite pop act

Singer Regine Velasquez was voted the Philippines' favourite music artist, while Indonesia picked five-man band PADI as their choice and Malaysia chose singer Siti Nurhaliza.

Nurhaliza said afterwards that winning the prize was "not only motivation for me to better myself but an opportunity to venture further into the region".

Thailand picked local rock band Pru while Singapore's choice was Stefanie Sun.

The winners said it was important to remain true to themselves, rather than trying to copy Western artists.

Suki, a member of the band Pru said: "Asian artists try to emulate the West.

"When they try to do it, they don't do it as well as the Western artists. If you want to go international, you have to give something the West doesn't have. The problem is being very honest."

The concert, hosted by Boyzone's Ronan Keating and US singer Mandy Moore, attracted 7,000 fans to Singapore's Indoor Stadium.

It was also attended by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon actress Zhang Ziyi, fashion designer Donatella Versace and Japanese pop superstar Ayumi Hamasaki.

MTV said the show will be broadcast to more than over 150 million viewers across Asia, with highlights beamed around the globe.
