A temporary memorial to those who died in the 11 September attacks in New York will be built on the site of the World Trade Center, officials say.

Plaques bearing the names of every victim will be mounted along a fence or wall. It is hoped that most of them will be in place before next month's first-anniversary ceremony.

The wall is to remain throughout the redevelopment of the site, which is expected to take several years.

The names on the memorial are expected to reflect the first official list of victims, which was published by the New York medical examiner on Monday.

It has 2819 names on it - four fewer than were on lists compiled by the American media.

Former New York mayor Rudi Giuliani and relatives of the victims will read out every name at next month's commemoration.

The medical examiner's office says the list should not be taken as a final tally of those who died.

But the BBC's Jane Standley says that in reality, it is unlikely to change much now.

It includes all those whose remains have been identified, those presumed dead whose families have been granted a death certificate and about 90 others who are still officially listed as missing.

The medical examiner's accounting also includes a breakdown of victims by age - it finds most were between 30 and 42, with six victims children younger than four, and four other victims aged over 80.

A permanent memorial design is still in the planning stages.

Last month an official gathering of New Yorkers rejected a preliminary set of plans to rebuild the World Trade Center.
