Guinea under Camara: Story so far

A look back at events in Guinea under the rule of Captain Moussa Dadis Camara:

Capt Camara seizes power by military coup, six hours after the death of long-time President Lansana Conte.

He promises to hold presidential elections and says he will not stand. The African Union suspends Guinea until the restoration of constitutional order.

The West African regional body Ecowas suspends Guinea until elections are held.

Capt Camara names a new ruling body to replace the government, made up of military men and technocrats.

Several senior army officers are arrested, including the former chief of staff.

Ousmane Conte, the son of the former president, among several accused drug traffickers to face interrogation from the military leader on live television.

Three former ministers arrested, including Ahmed Tidiane Souare, prime minister at the time of the December coup.

They are questioned by Capt Camara on live television but later released after they agree to re-pay money they were accused of embezzling.

Two army officers are arrested on suspicion of plotting a coup.

Capt Camara says he has the right to stand for president in forthcoming elections, should he decide to do so.

Guinea on high alert after military government claims to have discovered plans for an attack on the country.

An announcement on state-run national radio says drugs cartels were believed to be behind the plans.

Capt Camara sets 31 January 2010 as date for presidential elections. His supporters form a movement urging him to stand.

Capt Camara says he cannot rule out the possibility, despite earlier promises.

African Union threatens sanctions on Guinea if Capt Camara goes ahead and stands in 2010 elections.

Opposition protests against his rumoured intentions to stand increase. Almost 160 people killed in army crackdown on opposition rally.
