Senior Moroccan Islamist on trial
Nadia Yassine

A leading spokeswoman for Morocco's main Islamic movement is due to go on trial in the capital, Rabat, accused of harming the monarchy.

Nadia Yassine was charged after voicing her preference for a republic in a newspaper interview.

On trial with her is Abdelaziz Koukas, the editor of the weekly al-Ousbouia al-Jadida, which published her statement earlier this month.

If found guilty, they face heavy fines and up to five years in prison.

Nadia Yassine, 41, is the daughter of Sheikh Abdessalam Yassine, the leader of the Islamic movement al-Adl wal-Ihsan - Justice and Good Deeds.

In an interview published on 2 June, she said she would prefer a republican rather than an "autocratic" regime.

Ms Yassine denies damaging the monarchy, saying she was expressing a personal opinion, not urging mass action.

University-educated and articulate, Ms Yassine is regarded as a leading spokeswoman for her father's movement.

She headed the group when the sheikh was jailed under the late King Hassan II, the father of King Mohammed VI .
