Frederick Smith, 78, from Glasgow, reckoned motorists should pay.

"I think a small road toll charge for crossing a bridge, something like �1, is reasonable," he said.

"I also think it's a good idea that tolls on the Erskine Bridge have been scrapped because it is very underused."
