The robots were developed by scientists and engineers at the US Army's Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) and Dartmouth College, both in Hanover, New Hampshire.

First tests took place around campus; but for the serious business, the team went to Summit Camp in Greenland, a base sponsored by the US National Science Foundation.
