Ray Anthony, 39, a systems administrator from Maida Vale, London, said: "Even before Katrina, the cost was going up and up each month.

"I think the public is quite docile and we have allowed the government to take advantage.

"As a father who has to go on the school run every day, the petrol prices and taxation really hit me hard."
