About 98% of the population is Sunni Muslim. Turkey is a secular republic and the constitution provides for freedom of worship. Some religious expressions - such as the wearing of the Islamic headscarf - are restricted in state-run institutions, including universities. The ruling AK party has Islamist roots, but says it is committed to secularism.
