Charity fears

When the National Lottery began in 1994, fears were raised that public donations to charities would tumble.

Early figures seemed to bear out those worries.

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations believes the Lottery is one of a number of reasons for the temporary drop, but says gambling is not an efficient way of giving to charity anyway.
