Ms Gale who works for an MEP, said: "I think it's difficult to be actively optimistic - realism has got to be the name of the game. It is a difficult time for the Conservatives particularly from the European perspective - the UKIP shenanigans have to be recognised so I think guarded optimism verging on realism really."
