Experts were concerned about safety at level crossings even before the Berkshire train crash that killed seven.

Now there are calls to replace all crossings on high speed lines with tunnels.

But Network Rail insists level crossings are safe, pointing to a tiny number of incidents among the 680 million times vehicles use them every year.
