Crime overview
The UK's 2003/ 2004 crime statistics show a mixed picture. Recorded offences - those registered by police - increased 1% overall on 2002/ 2003 and violent crime went up 12%.

Yet the British Crime Survey (BCS) - based on questioning people about their experience of crime - shows a 5% drop in total offences.
