England�s rural population grew by 1.7m (13.7%) between 1981 and 2002.

The Countryside Agency says roads are deteriorating and services are being stretched.

The trend shows little sign of abating as the government earmarks hundreds of thousands more homes, mainly in the South East, to meet growing need and stabilise prices.
