Geraldine Wiggins, an unemployed worker in Detroit, says Americans used to "take it for granted" that they were safe.

But things have changed since the Cold War, she says.

"Then we were on guard, but we got lax. Look at al-Qaeda. You have people who are not afraid to confront us. We no longer stand like we used to."
