Soft money
In the past, Democrats have narrowed the money gap through �soft money�. This is given to parties at state level to bypass legal limits on gifts to individuals' campaigns, but was banned in 2002. In 2004 donors - mainly Democrats - gave to so-called "527" groups which campaign indirectly through issue-based ads and voter mobilisation drives.
