Somalis were traditionally nomadic animal herders and meat remains a big part of their lives.

Small-scale butchers have set up stalls across Mogadishu and cattle and sheep can be seen wandering the streets.

Despite their long coastline, many Somalis refuse to eat fish and only the very poorest will have a meal without meat.
