By 1994 most of the former Communist countries of Eastern Europe have applied to join the European Union. Ten are on the road to joining by 2004.

After a century which saw the collapse of empires and the fragmentation of Europe into dozens of small states, a new alliance is once more being forged, which promises to create the biggest single market in the world.
