A German website is offering undecided voters advice on who they should support in this Sunday's Bundestag elections.

The Wahl-O-Mat (Vote-o-matic) site asks anyone who logs on to give their opinion on 27 questions covering a wide range of political issues.

Some of the questions asked include:

• Should hashish and marijuana be legalised?

• Do we need a professional army?

• Should it be legal to help someone to die?

• Should immigrants have to attend state-run courses to help them integrate better?

Others include education policy, the labour market, debt relief and homosexual marriages.

There are four possible responses to each question - yes, no, neutral, and no opinion.

Finally, German surfers are asked to nominate those areas of policy which interest them most.

When they click on the final button, the Wahl-O-Mat tells them which party is nearest to their views.

Wooing first-time voters

The website is run by the Federal Agency for Civic Education with help from Berlin's Free University, and is designed to appeal to first-time voters.

The organisers say more than one million people have already used the site.

The results so far show Gerhard Schroeder's Social Democratic Party (SPD) on 29%, with Edmund Stoiber's Christian Democrats (CDU-CSU) only scraping 18%.

The big winners are the liberal Federal Democrats (FDP) - 26% - followed by the Greens on 17%, and the reformed communist Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) on 10%.

These are scores these three parties will never achieve in the real world - proof that virtual reality is a place where dreams can come true.
