Lynette White, 20, was murdered on 14 February 1988 |
A senior officer arrested as part of the inquiry into the original investigation of the murder of prostitute Lynette White has been released on police bail. The Gwent Police officer was arrested for offences of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and misconduct in a public office.
Lynette White, 20, was killed in her Cardiff flat on Valentine's Day 1988.
In total, 29 people have been arrested as part of the 28-month investigation.
The inquiry - supervised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) - was launched in July 2003 to establish what went wrong in the original 1988 investigation.
'Relentless'
Three men jailed in 1990 for the murder - Steven Miller, Yusef Abdullahi and Tony Paris - later had their convictions quashed at the Court of Appeal.
In 2003, Jeffrey Gafoor was imprisoned for life after he admitted stabbing the prostitute 50 times at her flat in the city's Butetown area.
This latest arrest - involving an officer who used to work for the South Wales force - was carried out by South Wales Police with support from collagues in Avon and Somerset.
Assistant Chief Constable Stephen Cahill, who has been overseeing the current investigation, said police would be "relentless" in their inquiry to determine what went wrong in the original case.
