Lynette White, 20, was murdered on 14 February 1988 |
A retired detective chief inspector arrested as part of the investigation of the inquiry into the murder of Cardiff prostitute Lynette White has been released on police bail. He was questioned over offences of false imprisonment, conspiracy to pervert the course of justice and misconduct in public office.
Lynette White, 20, was killed in her flat on Valentine's Day 1988.
In total 28 people have been arrested as part of the investigation.
The officer was arrested at his home on Wednesday morning, and was held in custody at Swansea Central Police Station.
The investigation, which is being supervised by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), was launched in July 2003 to establish what went wrong in the original 1988 investigation.
Convictions overturned
Three men jailed in 1990 for the murder - Steven Miller, Yusef Abdullahi and Tony Paris - later had their convictions quashed at the Court of Appeal.
In 2003, Jeffrey Gafoor was imprisoned for life after he admitted stabbing the prostitute 50 times at her flat in the city's Butetown area.
South Wales Police assistant chief constable Stephen Cahill said police were determined to find out "what went wrong in the original inquiry".
"It is complex and it is testing, and we remain steadfastly committed to seeing it through to its ultimate conclusion.
"Today's arrest represents the latest phase in the inquiry that we hope, when ultimately concluded, will finally allow Lynette's family, as well as those who were wrongly convicted of her murder, to draw a line under the tragedy and move on."
