Many women 'face a major problem'
Aderyn Coull

Sheltered housing warden Aderyn Coull joined droves of Highland Council workers to protest over pensions in the rain in Inverness on Tuesday.

The 53-year-old said female staff would be among the hardest hit when it came to drawing their pension.

She said: "For most women who work in local government part-time they face a major problem.

"The average pension is only 3,800 and for women it is under 2,000, which equates to 31 a week.

"A lot of people have put a lot of time into local government service knowing they are going to get back less from their pensions than what they put in it.

"I won't be so badly affected as others because I've only been paying in for seven years and do not have the same years of service as other staff.

"But there are a lot of people who been paying into the pension for many years and that guaranteed pension is being taken away.

"Deals were agreed for the fire brigade, police and health board staff - now it is our turn."
