Funerals delayed by strike action
Funeral directors
Burials and cremations have been delayed by a day in Dumfries
Funeral services in Dumfries and Galloway have been hit by council workers' industrial action.

Families were unable to register a death and all burials and cremations have been postponed for the day.

Local funeral directors were given seven days' notice to make provisions for the strike.

Arthur Jardine, from William Jardine Directors in Dumfries, said this reduced the impact but it was still unfair on bereaved families.

Mr Jardine said that in different circumstances the strike could have had much greater impact.

"This is okay as far as we are concerned this time," he said. "But at other times - when people are maybe going abroad or on holiday - it would be disastrous for them."

The Dumfries funeral director said it was still upsetting for people to have to delay services for 24 hours.

"It is still awkward for people - it means they have got to put off a funeral or cremation for a day," he said.

"Fair enough people strike but it shouldn't be to stop people from having a burial or cremation or effect them in some way or another.

"It is all right for them to strike - but it means that other people suffer."
