The Writer's Prize for Radio Drama

In 2013 BBC Radio joined forces with BBC Writers to launch The Writer’s Prize: an innovative and prestigious new writing award for Radio Drama.

Writing something that wins something? Nope. Never happens. Never gonna happen to me. Just isn’t.
— Christine Entwisle (winner in 2014)

The Writer's Prize 2013

In its first year two Radio Dramas were selected for commission: Rock Me Amadeus by Simon Topping and Bang Up by Sarah Hehir. Sarah’s drama Bang Up was first broadcast on Radio 4 in August 2013 and Simon’s script launched Radio 4’s Original British Dramatists in May 2014.

One of the runners-up, A Thing Inside a Thing Inside a Thing by Iain AJ Ross, was also commissioned to be part of the second Original British Dramatists on BBC Radio 4 and broadcast on 11 June 2015.

The judges Roy Williams, Jeremy Howe and Kate Rowland were really impressed by the range and calibre of the drama scripts. As Kate Rowland observed, “We were confronted by complex storytelling, boldness and an emotional engagement that comes from writers passionate about their subject.”

'A Thing Inside A Thing Inside a Thing' has been shortlisted for the Imison Award 2016, for the best original script by a writer new to Radio.

The Writer's Prize 2014

The Writer’s Prize ran for the second time in autumn 2014 with judges Jeremy Howe (Commissioning Editor, BBC Radio 4 Drama), Kate Rowland (BBC Creative Director, New Writing) and award-winning writer Katie Hims.

The winner was Christine Entwisle for her script Doyouwishtocontinue.  Christine's script was produced by BBC Radio Drama Scotland and launched Radio 4's Original British Dramatists on 8 June 2015.
