During their year-long residency, the winning writer received over £12,000, got to spend six months working with the BBC, including time with BBC Studios, followed by six months with NTW. They were given access to industry expertise and support to develop their ideas and talent alongside a BBC-broadcast credit in the form of a BBC Radio 4 drama commission.

The Wales Writer in Residence 2020-21
Faebian Averies was announced as the second Wales Writer in Residence live on a BBC Radio Wales Arts Show special in December 2020.
The judging panel was made up by NTW’s new Artistic Director Lorne Campbell, BBC Radio 4 Drama Commissioner Alison Hindell, Development Executive at BBC Studios Wales Jenna Robbins, BBC Writers Wales Development Producer Helen Perry and guest judge Welsh actor and producer Rakie Ayola.
Faebian's winning script The Lemonade Lads (listen on BBC Sounds) was subsequently produced for BBC Radio 4 and in March 2022 Faebian was awarded the Imison Award for the best play by a writer new to Radio/Audio at the BBC Audio Drama Awards.

Rhiannon Boyle was the inaugural Wales Writer in Residence with National Theatre Wales and BBC Wales. Rhiannon spent six months with both organisations and went on to have her winning play, Safe from Harm, produced for BBC Radio 4 and broadcast on Wednesday 20th January 2021 and on BBC Sounds.
