Guyana
The only English-speaking country in South America, Guyana gained independence in 1966. Almost three-quarters of the country is forested. Many of the indigenous and local communities depend totally on the forest for their livelihood. Guyana is a small, lightly populated country. It does suffer from environmental threats to the coastal strip and rainforest, poverty and violent crime, fuelled by the drugs trade.
