Global recession hits central Africa

The economic downturn may be global - but it has affected different regions in very different ways.

Many African countries were insulated from the worst effects of the financial crisis, because their banking systems were relatively self-contained.

But the subsequent economic recession has had a big impact in countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, because demand for natural resources has declined and commodity prices have fallen.
