Seven candidates are running for president, including the incumbent Bingu wa Mutharika for the Democratic Progressive Party and John Tembo, of the opposition coalition between the Malawi Congress Party and the United democratic front.

It is the country's fourth democratic elections since the end of the Hastings Banda regime; we look back at the campaign but also at the challenges facing the future head of state.
