Friday 3rd November Wilfred Kusemererwa is excited about Sino-African relations as the Summit opens in Beijing. Africa, Africa, Africaaaaa, it goes without a saying that "the colour of the cat does not matter as long as it catches a mouse." China is calling and coming. What else can we say? What Africa has been looking for all along is knocking at our door. Gone are the days Africa had to kneel before Europe and America. Here comes a friend - more than a friend - who is inviting us to discuss and share his and our vision. Since the British and Americans are still muscling it out with the Middle East, Africa is no more a priority to them. Long live the People's Republic of China and long live Africa. Thursday 1st November Rev. J. Bosco Bangura in Belgium is pleased that the issue of female genital mutilation is on the international agenda again. The recent interest that has been generated in the west over Female Genital Mutilation is welcome news to those of us who detest Africans like Khalid Adem, an Ethiopian immigrant presently living in the US, who has just been sentenced to ten years of imprisonment. I can't understand why Africans who emigrate to the West still allow themselves to be completely held captive by inhumane cultural savagery and barbarity that some unfortunately defend as their African cultural heritage. My hope is that African girls, irrespective of where they are born, may be safe and can grow up with a sense of complete self-worth knowing that they have not lost any of their genital organs to a gruesome tradition. I pray that this prosecution that has started in the USA will soon reverberate in the length and breadth of Africa, capturing those whose delight is to inflict pain on helpless girls. Wednesday 2nd November Joe Noutoua Wandah in Accra, Ghana has praise for former South African president, Nelson Mandela for his reactions to PW Botha's death. As a step towards lasting peace, reconciliation and true democracy, the hero of Africa's statemen, Nelson Mandela, who suffered the most under former South African President PW Botha during the apartheid regime, has once again demonstrated all these traits by paying tribute to Mr Botha. I hope all other African Leaders will see reasons to learn from this statesmanship - and all despite his pains during the rule of Mr. Botha! So if we as a continent want to foster lasting reconciliation, we must borrow from former Mandela's wisdom. Tuesday 31st October Justus Korir from Nairobi, Kenya, gives his condolence to Nigerians who lost their love ones in Sunday's plane crash. My heart and prayers go to the families of the people who perished in the plane crash in Nigeria. Despite the so called aviation reforms, Nigerian skies remain unsafe and I think all authorities should put their heads and minds together and come up with a lasting solution to avoid more deaths. President Obasanjo must take the necessary steps. Politicians in Africa have all the time to fight political wars but not a minute to solve something as deadly as air accidents. Monday 30th October Yaya Mammo from Adama in Ethiopia is unhappy that Lucy, the 3.2 million-year-old remains of a human ancestor found in Ethiopia in 1974, will be going on tour of the USA. Who gave this regime permission to send Lucy and a hundred artifacts on a six year trip to the States? One day it deafens us with propaganda about exploiting tourism and the next day, Lucy is on a prolonged trip to America, so that the rich Americans won't have to come to Addis after all, and our country doesn't benefit from the tourists dollars! I believe that Meles Zenawi and his administration are just trying to please the Americans! |
