Friday 29th September Sunday Emorinken, a Nigerian writing from Kaolack, Senegal believes that his country's vice-president is opportunistic and wonders where his loyalties lie. I welcome the decision of the PDP board members to suspend the membership of Vice-President Atiku Abubakar. People should stop blaming President Obasanjo for being responsible for his woes. Atiku has no one to blame but himself. Apart from the corruption allegations, he has a lukewarm attitude towards the party to which his loyalty should be unquestionable. He should forget his PDP membership and team up with an opposition political party instead. It's time for him to taste the other side of politics Thursday 28th September Gheng Enock from Eldoret in Kenya writes to say that the recent excommunication of Zambian archbishop Emmanuel Milingo is too harsh. Much as I support celibacy in the Catholic church, I don't agree with those pointing an accusing finger at Milingo while never looking at their own behaviour. Yes, his behaviour may be unforgivable but it's even scarier to look at the way some priests generally behave. I am truly moved by his faith and courage; for why cheat God, yourself and fool the whole world if you feel you can't meet those standards? I rather look up to one who makes his stand public, rather than those who go out with women secretly and later claim they are celibate. Celibacy is a gift from God, not an obligation! Wednesday 27th September Abraham Akech Achiek in Kenya writies about how pleased he is with the conduct of Zambians during their election. I want to congratulate and to extend my thanks to Zambians for the calm that you have shown during the campaigns, this is not commonly seen in many countries in Africa. During polling and counting days please show the same spirit. The entire continent and neighbouring countries are watching you closely. Tuesday 26th September Ignatius Ssuuna from Rwanda was prompted to write this letter after the Roman Catholic church's excommunication of the controversial Zambian Archbishop, Emmanuel Milingo. The Vatican should agree to married bishops. After all, many Catholic Church leaders have already flouted the rules of celibacy. It is better to let them be married openly rather than for them to remain celibate during day time but producing children at night. These poor children are then disowned for fear of the priests being ex-communicated. Monday 25th September Abdou Jammeh a student from the University of Gambia is delighted with the extension of Yahya Jammeh's presidency The reality is that Gambians regardless of their tribes, religion and region have decided to give His Exellency Yahya Jammeh another mandate for the next five years and this is final. As far as Gambians are concerned, he is far better than President George W. Bush of America because he is not taking us to war and at the same time, he is giving us the development leap we need as a nation. |
