A New Stage - Cape Town Fugard Theatre

As South Africa celebrates 20 years since the release of Nelson Mandela from jail, a theatre named after one of the country's most famous playwrights, Athol Fugard, opens in the District Six area of Cape Town.

Bulldozed to the ground under the apartheid regime, the area was once the home to a thriving artistic community.

The Strand talks to him, and to Mark Dornford May and Mannie Mamin, directors of the new Fugard Theatre about its role in the redevelopment of this iconic neighbourhood.
