Very interesting collection brings back fond memories of the late 40's and50's when I lived in Dunch Lane and was a foundation student at Shurnhold "George Ward School" having earlier attended Lowbourne Primary. Now living in Australia the photo's certainly refresh my personal memories of Melksham and Wiltshire.

A Gt. Aunt was a nurse in Melksham Cottage Hospital. Nice to see the old buildings.

I found it fascinating looking at old Melksham. It was great seeing the old Church House in Church street where my Great Gran ( Lilian Holt ) lived, and also my mother ( Myrna Holt ) lived for the first part of her life. Also seeing the old school where she went down by St Micheals and all Angels Church.I could also see the cottage where i now live in Church Street.

i dont really know this area at all but was looking to find any family members near by possibly, although i dont think this will happen the photos are absolutely amazing and i like looking at the old fashioned way of life, tough as it most definetly was.

I moved to Melksham in Aprill 2009 from Berkshire I love the town and the Countryside surrounding it, but all ready I see land sold for more rabit hutch houses if towns like this keep growing out they will all join up and country life will be gone.

Melksham looks fantastic. The architecture has great character, what a contrast to todays soul-less buildings built in the 60's and 70's. What a shame.

Although there isn't a photo, my Grandfather ( Walter John Lewington ) and Great grandfather lived at Drinkwater House Semington Road. My great grandfather ran barges up the Kennet & Avon Canal carrying non-perishables from at least Bath to Newbury. My grandfather recalled at the age of 12 arriving at Newbury when the canal froze over and being given sixpence to catch the coach back, but, kept the sixpence and skated back.He was also presented with a watch and chain at the age of 9 when he saved a man from drowning.

It is great to see a picture of the Bear Hotel. A relative of mine Henry Bown was Hotel Keeper in the 1800s.

My grandparents ran the WillowsTemperance Hotel in Bank St.. Are there any pics of it in existence? I understand it was demolished more than 30 years ago.

I was born in Melksham, now live away, but feel that the heart has gone out of Melksham, progress yes, but not at the expence of lovely buildings, which has happen in Melksham.

For my homework I often come on here because although there is not much there you get lots of detail!! Its ashme that Melksham is getting rubbish like every time a shop gets sold then it turns into a estate agents!

It was great to see the picture of The Red Lion,i was a regular in there for many yaers.Its a shame the pub is now closed for development into flats.Yet another bit of History gone

I was very interested in the pictures of The Red Lion as my grandmothers sister had the pub in the 20s and 30s and my uncle was born there. We are trying to trace him Alan Wey,does anyone know anything about the pub or him?

I'm a 14 year old resident of Melksham and it's remarkable to see what it used to look like. Melksham is losing all it's business and it's dying.
